Savannah, GAArmstrong Atlantic State University has received
approval to begin offering its Master of Public Health (MPH) as a
fully online degree program to eligible candidates this summer. It
is the only such program to be offered in the state and the only accredited
MPH program in the University System of Georgia (USOG). The Department
of Health Sciences will not be admitting students into the
program until 2004.
"The increasing demand for public healthcare personnel is a global
issue that is apparent in Savannah and the surrounding communities,"
said Sandy Streater, head of AASU's Department of Health Sciences.
AASU will offer the master's program in public health as an online
degree in order to meet the demands of place bound students in the
region. The program will also benefit traditional students who want
to complete more of their course work online. Initially the program
will be offered on a limited basis and will expand to accommodate
more students over the next several years.
Graduates of the degree program will have the ability to plan, implement,
and evaluate community health programs. They will have the skills
to assess health needs in the community, develop sound public health
policy, and ensure mandated services are provided.
The MPH program provides a combination of education, scholarship,
and service to develop community health principles and practices.
Significant growth since 1998 illustrates the increasing demand for
the program (up from thirty-one majors in 1998 to eighty-three majors
in 2002).
AASU is one of three designated regional health professions education
centers in the USOG.
