Named Head of IT Department

Joy Reed has been named head of Armstrong Atlantic State
University's fast-growing Department of Information Technology. Housed
in the School of Computing, the IT department offers a four-year degree
program and certificates in information technology.
The IT program is designed to meet the local business communitys
increasing demand to fill computer related positions.
The program requires course work in visual basic programming,
operating systems, network administration, applied data communications,
client/server systems, and database management.
Reed holds a master's degree in computer science from University of
Maryland, College Park, and a Ph.D. in mathematics from Auburn University.
Before coming to AASU, Dr. Reed spent sixteen years in Oxford England.
She has served as director/coordinator of the computing master's degree
programs at Oxford University, Oxford Brookes University, and AASU.
Dr. Reed's research focuses on formal specification methods for computer
systems. She serves as the local secretary/treasurer of the Savannah
section of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, an
international professional organization for engineers and computer scientists.
Since its inception enrollment for the IT program has nearly tripled
from fifty to one hundred thirty students. AASU's School of Computing
has grown from offering one degree program to two undergraduate degrees,
one graduate degree, and three certificates. The IT program was first
offered in 2001 by AASU's burgeoning School of Computing.
