FRIDAY, APRIL 15, 2005
Week of the Young Child Conference

Savannah, GA—April 5, 2005—The College of Education at Armstrong Atlantic State University will host the Week of the Young Child Conference on April 15. It will be held in University Hall, room 156. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. Participants must have pre-registered due to limited seating of 200. Author Ann Douglas will be the main speaker at the event.

When Douglas' son, Frederick John Cox (formerly of Jesup, Georgia) died on 9-11-01 in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, he was a rising star with Sandler O’Neill & Partners, working on the 104th floor of the South Tower. In honor of him and all who died with him that day, Ann Douglas, established Betta Place, Inc., a non-profit foundation to promote world peace. Already it has initiated a pilot program for school children who were traumatized by the attack, which they saw from their playground. As part of her efforts to promote world peace, Douglas has published a children’s book, Freddy & Flossy Flutterby, based on a story that she used to tell her children.

Douglas will show slides of the paintings she created to illustrate the story, sing original songs, and explain principles of love and forgiveness as related to the emotional well being of a generation of children. Books will be available for purchase and personal signing by Ann Douglas. All proceeds go to Betta Place, Inc., $18.00, tax included.

Also, four break-out sessions will be offered regarding a wide variety of topics including: literacy, telling stories, reading and language arts, international pen pals, just to name a few.
