Students Design New Program for St. Mary's Community Center that Draws
Record Crowd
Savannah, GA-September
22, 2004Adult education students at Armstrong Atlantic State University
planned an informational event for St. Mary's Community Centeran
outreach program of St. Joseph's/Candler that serves the Cuyler-Brownville
neighborhood. Designed to increase participation in the center's services,
the multifaceted event drew a record of 212 residents, a boost of approximately
800% over previous events.
Residents of the struggling African-American community had their blood
pressure and blood sugar checked, and could register for cervical, breast,
and prostate screenings. They also had the opportunity to explore the
Internet and online job search strategies.
Three residents tested with blood pressure at the stroke level, many
registered to vote, and all of the participants explored many of the
ongoing services provided by the center and the local community.
Sr. Pat Baber commented that a high number of the attendees are continuing
to visit the center on a regular basis. She said the program encouraged
the residents to get medical checkups, which are so vital in warding
off diseases. For the first time, she has needed to schedule a full
day of breast and cervical screenings.
"Neighborhood residents had fun mingling with the students and
participating in the learning activities," said Baber. "The
students have brought a caring face to this community, and some have
returned to St. Mary's to continue to assist the residents."
Since the informational event, more of the residents are taking advantage
of the center's services and being proactive about taking care of their
health. Appreciative of AASU's contribution, Baber said the program
has had a very positive impact in the lives of the residents.
