AASU Recognizes IP for Twenty Years of Support of Teacher Institute

Savannah, GA—Armstrong Atlantic State University celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the Teachers’ Environment and Free Enterprise Institute (TEFEI) for elementary, middle grades, and secondary teachers on July 3. Educational exhibits and an awards luncheon were held as part of the event.

A special plaque was presented to International Paper in recognition of twenty years of support for the institute. Jimmy Sanders, resource forester with I.P., accepted the plaque on behalf of the company. Additionally, other supporters of the institute were awarded tokens of appreciation recognizing their longtime commitment to the program.

TEFEI is a collaboration between International Paper and Armstrong Atlantic, which have joined together to assist teachers in increasing their understanding of the relationships between our physical and biological environment and the free enterprise system. Primary goals include the achievement of new knowledge and the incorporation of this knowledge into classroom instruction.

"Participants spend a month slogging through the marshes and swamps," said Lloyd Newberry, retired dean of the College of Education and longtime coordinator of the Institute. "In its twenty year history, the institute has reached nearly 500 teachers, who have taught over 120,000 students."

As part of the institute, many outstanding consultants from the areas of science, industry, and government present lectures, workshops, and field experiences designed to update teachers’ knowledge and to provide them with ideas and materials for their classrooms. The project is funded by International Paper and provides instate tuition, supplies and materials, supplemental benefits of daily refreshments, luncheons, and field trips for the twenty-five accepted instate participants.

Participants who meet Armstrong Atlantic State University admission requirements and successfully complete the institute earn six semester hours of graduate credit that may be used for certificate renewal and /or graduate degrees.
