
Shipley
Named Department Head of Computer Science
Savannah, GAArmstrong Atlantic State University's School of Computing
announces that Charles Shipley has been named head of the Department
of Computer Science.
"Dr. Shipley brings tremendous experience to the position having
served on numerous university and University System of Georgia committees
throughout his tenure at Armstrong Atlantic," said Dr. Raymond
Greenlaw, dean of the School of Computing. "He also was instrumental
in the department's efforts to gain and maintain ABET (Accrediting Board
for Engineering and Technology) accreditation.
An Armstrong Atlantic professor for over thirty years, Shipley began
his career as a teacher of mathematics and computer science. He started
teaching exclusively in the computer science department when it formed
in 1986. Currently, he has research interests in the areas of operating
systems, computer organization and architecture, and programming languages.
Shipley has served as the university representative to the Board of
Regent's Advisory Committee on Computer Sciences since the early 1980s.
He also is the long-time coach of AASU's programming teams that have
twice won first place in division two of the Southeast Regional Programming
Contest.
The School of Computing was formed at Armstrong Atlantic in 2002. The
degrees offered include the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science,
Master of Science in Computer Science, and Bachelor of Information Technology.
A two-year Engineering Studies Program is offered in collaboration with
GTREP (the Georgia Tech Regional Engineering Program) and RETP (the
Regent's Engineering Transfer Program). A number of certificate programs
are also available.
