AASU to Host Yamacraw Day March 6

Savannah, GA—Yamacraw—the state's economic development initiative to make Georgia a world leader in the design of broadband communication systems, devices, and chips—will host a Yamacraw Day at Armstrong Atlantic State University on March 6. The event, covering many aspects of Yamacraw and its impact on Armstrong Atlantic, will be held from 1:00 to 6:00 P.M. in AASU's Science Center.

"Yamacraw is helping to strengthen eight computer science programs in the University System of Georgia," said Ray Greenlaw, dean of AASU's School of Computing. "The benefits of Yamacraw will be long-lasting, creating in Georgia both high paying design jobs and many more support and supply-chain jobs."

Yamacraw Day will feature several distinguished speakers who will make presentations on a range or topics, including Yamacraw projects, member companies, and National Science Foundation grants and scholarships. Yamacraw certification will be awarded to computer science students who have completed Yamacraw research courses. This presentation will begin at 2:00 P.M.

Yamacraw's distinguished speaker, Dr.Vijay Madisetti, will present an overview of Yamacraw's Embedded Software Research Program from 4:00-5:00 P.M. Madisetti, director of Yamacraw ’s Embedded Software Group and a professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, will present some research highlights and results.

Degree candidates improve their employment chances with participating companies by earning these certificates. Currently, there are 660 students in AASU's School of Computing: 150 pre-computer science majors, 100 computer science majors, 130 information technology majors, 20 computer science master's students, and 260 engineering students.

AASU's School of Computing works closely with VeriSign (a Yamacraw company) and is building relationships with other high-tech companies within the region. AASU, Georgia Southern and Savannah State universities, and the Georgia Tech Regional Engineering Program hold a Yamacraw Distinguished Speaker Series each semester.
