AASU to Host Annual High School Math Tournament

SAVANNAH, GA—February 7, 2005—More than 400 students from about 30 high schools from Georgia and South Carolina are expected to participate in Armstrong Atlantic State University's 27th annual High School Math Tournament on Saturday, February 19. The competition will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in AASU's Fine Arts Auditorium.

"Some of the finest math students from each state will participate in the two-part competition," said Dale Kilhefner, professor of mathematics at AASU. "The tournament stimulates a more challenging and competitive interest in math among high-achieving math students from the regional high schools."

The testing will be given in two parts on multiple-choice and ciphering. Participants will work individually on the multiple choice section; teams of up to four persons will be given twelve problems to solve in the ciphering section. The competition will conclude with a paper airplane contest with participants competing for both accuracy and distance.

An awards ceremony will follow to recognize the top-ranking schools and individuals in both the varsity and junior-varsity competitions. The top winner will be announced for each grade from nine through twelve.

Armstrong Atlantic's mathematics and computer science departments jointly sponsor the tournament. For more information about the competition, contact Dale Kilhefner at 921.2056.
