Hoffman Named Head of AASU's Math Department

Savannah, GA—August 20, 2004—Dr. Lorrie L. Hoffman has been named head of the Department of Mathematics at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU).

After completing her Ph.D. in statistics at the University of Iowa in 1981, Hoffman worked at three Fortune 100 companies. She conducted applied research in optimization, modeling, and simulation, eventually rising to the level of management.

After gaining industry experience, Hoffman returned to the university setting as the ideal place to merge her talents for imparting statistical knowledge with her industry experience and consultant’s skill set. Prior to joining AASU, Dr. Hoffman taught statistics and directed the Institute of Statistics at the University of Central Florida. During her tenure, she worked with dozens of industry colleagues and other educators to secure approximately $250,000 in grant money and win several "best teacher" awards.

Outside of the classroom, Hoffman shares novel statistical techniques, applications, and case studies via papers and proceedings and speaks often and in varied venues ranging from professional conferences to judicial court testimony to reporting survey results at city council meetings.
