Inaugural Anne Allman Scholarship Presentation AASU Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Combo Concert Savannah, GAOctober 30, 2003 The Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) Department of Art, Music & Theatre presents the AASU Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Combo in concert on Tuesday, November 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the AASU Fine Arts Auditorium. In conjunction with this performance, Anne Allman will present the inaugural Anne Allman Percussion Scholarship and Guitar Scholarship Awards. Stephen Primatic, AASU professor of percussion, opens the program by leading the Percussion Ensemble through five pieces, highlighted by a composition of his own, Salsa para la morena. This ensemble, a full battery of percussion instruments that produces an acoustical wash of sound as well as a visually spectacular show, also performs the flavorful Mitos Brasileiros by Ney Rosauro, and Dmitri Kabalevskys lighthearted and quick paced Dueling Comedians. Anne Allman, owner of Annies Guitars and Drums on Waters Avenue and cousin to the famed Allman Brothers band members, is presenting the inaugural Anne Allman Scholarship Awards during this concert. The Percussion Scholarship will be awarded to sophomore Chris Fullerton and the Guitar Scholarship will be presented to sophomore Anthony Broadnax. These awards will be presented on an annual basis to recognize talented musicians for their accomplishments and to encourage these young people to continue to fine-tune their skills. The AASU Jazz Combo, directed by trumpeter and adjunct music faculty member Frank Gordon, closes the concert with one of Duke Ellingtons most famous tunes It Dont Mean A Thing If It Aint Got That Swing. Preceding the Ellington classic, the combo performs a number of charts representing compositional jazz masters such as Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, and Wayne Shorter.
