Chemistry Student Receives National Scholarship
Savannah, GAJuly
23, 2004Marquit'a Bullock, a senior chemistry major at Armstrong
Atlantic State University (AASU), was named an American Chemical Society
(ACS) Scholar. She is the first AASU student to be selected into the
ACS Scholar Program and received a scholarship in the amount of $3,000.
"The ACS let Marquit'a know that her selection is an indication
of their confidence in her ability to succeed in a rigorous major in
the chemical sciences," said Todd Hizer, interim department head
of chemistry at AASU. "She is one of approximately 100 new ACS
Scholars who are designated annually from a large national pool of candidates."
Bullock transferred to AASU from Mercer University to pursue an ACS
certified degree in chemistry. This summer, she is participating in
a Skidaway Institute of Oceanography internship on lipid analysis for
water samples collected from the Black Sea. Bullock is the treasurer
of the AASU chapter of Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society
and serves as a laboratory assistant in the chemistry department at
AASU. She is a member and officer of Delta Sigma Theta, Tau Alpha Chapter,
and a member of National Organization for the Professional Advancement
of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers. After graduation, Bullock
plans on attending graduate school and pursuing her interests in forensic
science and chemistry.
The ACS Scholar Program, founded in 1994, has awarded more than 1,000
scholarships to minority students who plan to pursue an undergraduate
college degree in the chemical sciences. The scholarships are awarded
on the basis of merit and financial need.
