Garden Club Council Endows Scholarship at AASU

Savannah, GA—September 30, 2003—The Garden Club Council of Chatham County—a collection of garden clubs that has been in existence for more than fifty years—has endowed a scholarship for students pursuing a course of study in subjects relating to botany, horticulture, landscaping, or fine arts at Armstrong Atlantic State University. The Garden Club Council Scholarship will be awarded annually to a full-time student.

The first recipient of the scholarship is Juan Aragon, a senior majoring in biology and chemistry who is also completing the pre-medical curriculum. Aragon has conducted cutting edge research in "biocomplexity" for scientists through Skidaway Institute of Oceanography's Maymester Program. He continues to conduct research for molecular biologists at that institute and plans to pursue a career in biochemical research.

Aragon is a member of AASU's Honors Program and was elected treasurer of the Student Government Association for the 2003-04 academic year. He serves as a community assistant in AASU's student residence community, Compass Point, and is a member of Rotaract Club and the International Student Organization.
