to Host Astronomy Lecture

2, 2004Sten Odenwald, education and public outreach manager for
the NASA IMAGE satellite program, will lecture on "Storms from
the Sun: Fact and Fiction," as part of the Shapley Lecture Program
at Armstrong Atlantic State University on March 11. The lecture will
be held at 7:00 p.m. in room 156 of AASUs University Hall. It
is free and open to the public.
Odenwald is an award-winning astronomer with Raytheon ITSS at the NASA
Goddard Space Flight Center. He received a doctorate degree in astronomy
from Harvard University. His research work involves the discovery and
investigation of the cosmic infrared background and the "first
light" from infant galaxies. He is the author of books such as
The Astronomy Cafe, The 23rd Cycle, Patterns in the Void, and Back to
the Astronomy Café. He is the recipient of the 1999 Goddard Space
Flight Center Excellence in Outreach Award and the Popular Writing Award
from the American Astronomical Society, Solar Physics Division.
The lecture is sponsored by the Astronomy Club at AASU. The American
Astronomical Society and the Shapley Endowment Fund have provided the
opportunity for astronomers to visit campuses across the United States
to speak on a variety of topics.
