AASU to Host DOE National Science Bowl

Savannah, GA—Armstrong Atlantic State University will host a sub-regional competition of the National Science Bowl on January 25 for students in grades nine through twelve attending public, private, and home schools in southeast Georgia. The science bowl will be held on the second floor of AASU's Science Center beginning at 9:00 A.M.

Competing in the science bowl will be thirty top science students on five teams representing schools from Jesup, Statesboro, and St. Simon's Island. The format of the competition will be Jeopardy-style, with teams using a buzzer system to answer questions. Winning teams will advance to state and national competitions.

The teams will answer questions on scientific topics in astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and the earth, computer, and general sciences. The questions, either multiple choice or short answer, are submitted by scientists from federal agencies, universities, and other Department of Energies facilities.

The National Science Bowl is a highly visible educational event and academic competition among teams of high school students. Participants compete in a verbal forum to solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of science and math. The regional and national events encourage student involvement in math and science activities, improve awareness of career options in science and technology, and provide an avenue of enrichment and reward for academic science achievement.
