AASU to Host 25th High School Math Tournament

SAVANNAH, GA— More than 300 students from thirty high schools in Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama are expected to participate in Armstrong Atlantic State University's twenty-fifth annual High School Math Tournament on Saturday, February 15. The competition will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. in AASU's Fine Arts Auditorium.

"The finest math students from each state will participate in the two-part competition," said Dale Kilhefner, associate professor of mathematics at AASU. "The tournament stimulates a more challenging and competitive interest in math among high-achieving math students from the local high schools."

The testing will be given in two parts on multiple-choice and ciphering. Participants will work individually on the multiple choice section; teams of up to four persons will be given twelve problems to solve in the ciphering section. The competition will conclude with a paper airplane contest with participants competing for both accuracy and distance.

An awards ceremony will follow to recognize the top-ranking schools and individuals in both the varsity and junior-varsity competitions. The top winner will be announced for each grade from nine through twelve. Winners of the past twenty-four competitions and their success stories will be on display.

Armstrong Atlantic's mathematics and computer science departments jointly sponsor the tournament. For more information about the competition, contact Dale Kilhefner at 921.2056.
