AASU Receives Approval to Offer BFA
Savannah, GA Armstrong Atlantic State University announced today that it has received approval from the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia to begin offering a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art (BFA). "The BFA program will prepare highly talented art students to meet today's demands in the art world," said Tom Cato, interim head of AASU's Department of Art, Music, and Theatre. "Graduates will be well trained in studio art and design using traditional media and computer technology," said Cato. The BFA will
be a totally new degree program at Armstrong Atlantic. It will build
on the existing BA program with an emphasis on professional studio art
production. This specialty allows students to pursue higher paying positions
and to pursue a master's degree in fine arts. Computer and electronic
technology will be incorporated across the curriculum. Admission to
the BFA program will require a portfolio of student work near the end
of the sophomore year. The portfolio will consist of works completed
in the required foundation courses. Transfer students will be required
to submit a portfolio or to complete the foundation courses before applying
to the program. According to
the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design, the BFA is
the most appropriate degree for serious, motivated students seeking
to become professional artists and designers. Armstrong Atlantic's
teacher education program will be supported by the BFA's more varied
studio and art history courses. These offerings will raise the quality
of art education for teachers who will graduate as artists and teachers
of prekindergarten through twelfth grade students. The BFA degree
will serve art students in the coastal area from Charleston, SC, to
Jacksonville, FL, and throughout southeast Georgia. The majority of
the students will attend school full time. Courses will be offered during
the evening as part of an effort to attract and support part-time students. Graduates of
the BFA program will be prepared to seek employment opportunities within
a variety of areas that include design, art education, museums and galleries,
photography, printmaking, community art, and studio fine art. "Savannah
is an art sensitive community," said Cato. "One of Armstrong
Atlantic's goals for this program is to make more of a contribution
to visual arts culture in our region." For more details about the BFA, contact AASU's Department of Art, Music, and Theatre at 927.5325. Admissions information is available by calling 912.927.5277 or by visiting www.armstrong.edu.
