Starbucks Coffee Gives Campus a Jolt

Savannah, GA—October 6, 2004—Need a caffeine fix? Get your morning or late-night buzz at "The Coffee House," Armstrong Atlantic State University’s new coffee shop and cyber café that opens today during Celebrate AASU Day. Offering more than just a mug of Starbucks' Java, the establishment offers patrons a place to relax and socialize in Memorial College Center. The Coffee House offers specialty drinks, pastries, and grab and go sandwiches in a unique place on campus.

Aesthetically, the Coffee House is different from any other space on campus. Based largely around the existing light green terrazzo floor, the color scheme achieves the hi-tech look—stainless steel, light maple and black accent fabrics—that is sure to attract students. Muted lime green walls and lime green accent wall covering brighten the space. Durable lounge seating, bar height stools, as well as cage tables and chairs offer many options for seating. A computer station in metallic laminate and bright fabric offer a private place to check e-mail. Also, the Coffee House will offer wireless service in the near future.

The inspiration for the Coffee House came from Robin Jones, assistant director of student affairs, during her initial tour of campus. She found herself asking, "Where do all the students hang out?" After being hired, she discovered that there was great interest in the endeavor. Jones’ hope is that the Coffee House will stimulate interaction among students, staff, and faculty. She believes the new location will give campus residents an alternative to the cafeteria and commuters a place to go between classes.

"Branded eateries like Wendy's and Subway are popular among the larger universities, and coffee houses are hot right now," said Jones. That is why Starbucks was chosen to work with Aramark, the company that operates the university cafeteria.

In addition to the coffee and snacks offered, students, faculty and staff can make use of the Macintosh computer stations for surfing the web and checking their emails. It operates Mondays-Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Fridays from 7:30 am to 3 p.m. and will accept cash, check, and declining credit on the AASU card.
