AASU to Kick Off 3 Days for AASU Campaign

Savannah, GA—March 21, 2005—Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) is on the move to enhance resources for students and the Savannah community through its annual fund campaign—"3 Days for AASU." Community volunteers will visit businesses throughout metro-Savannah to obtain financial support for the university, April 5-7. Savannahians can actively improve the university and their community by saying "yes" to these volunteers. This year, AASU has set a goal of raising $150,000.

Annual fund gifts are used immediately to fund existing scholarships and leadership development programs designed to provide graduates with the skills necessary to make them leaders in their careers and in the community. Currently, the university offers over 200 scholarships that benefit a rich gamut of high-achieving, non-traditional, and financially needy students. The following are examples of some of the scholarships that were recently created at AASU:

Mark C. Clayton-Kappa Alpha Psi Scholarship Fund
Kappa Alpha Psi will award this scholarship annually to an African-American student in the junior class with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients will receive a stipend in the amount of $500. The scholarship is supported through an annual Scholarship Golf Tournament. This year's tournament is scheduled for April 9 at Hunter Army Golf Course. For more information, call 912.897.4246.

Chatham Artillery Memorial Scholarship
Chatham Artillery created this scholarship to fill in the financial gap for ROTC students, and dependents and spouses of active duty and reserve members. The scholarship program is for full-time students who demonstrate good academic standing, physical fitness, and are under the age of 31. Full scholarships are awarded annually and are renewable for four years to qualified students. For more information, call 912.927.5206.

The Cathryn Barnett Shriver Nursing Scholarship
This scholarship is offered to senior nontraditional students enrolled in the nursing program who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. Awarded annually in the amount of $1,000, the scholarship is designed to assist with textbooks, stethoscopes, and other costly equipment and fees. For more information, call 912.927.5272.

In addition to supporting existing scholarships, AASU will use the funds to expand the leadership development programs that are currently offered on its campus: Nick Mamalakis Emerging Leader Program for first-year students; Leaders Among Us for faculty and staff; and the Community Leadership and Engagement Series.

You don't need to look far to find an AASU graduate in Savannah. For example, 90% of law enforcement and corrections officers in southeast Georgia attended AASU. Eighty percent of local nurses and non-physician medical staff attend the university. And 75% of Savannah-Chatham County school teachers attend AASU. Fifty-two percent of the 2003-04 Teachers of the Year for Savannah-Chatham County schools were AASU graduates.
