AASU to Host Engineering Academy
for High-Achieving Students, June 14-18

Savannah, GA—April 12, 2004—Twenty-one future engineers, high school students who are high achieving in math and science, are exploring careers in engineering during the Engineering Academy June 14-18. Ten local engineers are serving as activity leaders and four technology teachers are helping out as well. The academy is open to high-achieving students attending private and public schools in Chatham, Effingham, Bryan, and Liberty counties. The academy is hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU).

The academy is being offered to give students some exposure to careers in engineering: civil, electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, environmental, and computer science— and to emphasize the importance of high achievement in math and the sciences as preparation for careers in this field. During the week, students will construct card castles that will support water bottles, survey the new parking lot during a "Survey Safari," assemble radios, build and race solar cars, and purify water through "Fabulous Filters." Participants also will take tours of Gulfstream Aerospace, JCB Construction Equipment, Georgia Tech's Savannah campus, and other local sites. T-shirts and certificates will be awarded at the conclusion of the academy.

Co-sponsors for the academy are Advanced Technology Development Center-Savannah, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Georgia Institute of Techonology-Savannah, Georgia Southern University, Gulfstream Aerospace, Coastal Empire Boy Scouts of America-Learning for Life, Savannah State University, The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Savannah Technical College, Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools, Thomas & Hutton Engineering Company, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Hussey, Gay, Bell &DeYoung, and JCB.
