Savannah, GASeptember 24, 2003 Armstrong Atlantic State
University has added three new plant collectionsThe Fern Collection,
The White Garden, and The Ginger Collection to its Arboretum,
which was officially designated in 2001. The Arboretum encompasses
Armstrong Atlantic's 250 acre campus and displays over 100 species
of trees and over 200 species of shrubs and other woody plants.
"The Fern Collection," featuring 23 varieties of native
and non-native ferns, is located on the west side of Jenkins Hall.
A collection of plants with white flowers or white variegated foliage,
"The White Garden," is located behind the Administration
Building. The recently completed "Ginger Collection" focuses
on seven groups of ginger plants and can be found at the south end
of Hawes Hall.
Several new collections are being planned and are scheduled for
planting this spring. An "International Garden" will feature
a design that includes plazas representing the continents of Africa,
Australia, South America, Europe, and Asia. Plants native to these
continents will be established around the plazas located in the
area between Solms and Hawes halls.
Several other collections are also being planted. Vascular plants
from the earliest land plants to the first flowering plants will
be shown in the "Primitive Garden." Interpretive displays
explaining the progression from reproduction by spores to reproduction
by flower will be included. A "Native Flora Garden," "Camellia
Species Collection," and "Physic Garden" are also
being planned, among other collections.
