AASU Adds Plant Collections to Arboretum

Savannah, GA—September 24, 2003— Armstrong Atlantic State University has added three new plant collections—The Fern Collection, The White Garden, and The Ginger Collection— to its Arboretum, which was officially designated in 2001. The Arboretum encompasses Armstrong Atlantic's 250 acre campus and displays over 100 species of trees and over 200 species of shrubs and other woody plants.

"The Fern Collection," featuring 23 varieties of native and non-native ferns, is located on the west side of Jenkins Hall. A collection of plants with white flowers or white variegated foliage, "The White Garden," is located behind the Administration Building. The recently completed "Ginger Collection" focuses on seven groups of ginger plants and can be found at the south end of Hawes Hall.

Several new collections are being planned and are scheduled for planting this spring. An "International Garden" will feature a design that includes plazas representing the continents of Africa, Australia, South America, Europe, and Asia. Plants native to these continents will be established around the plazas located in the area between Solms and Hawes halls.

Several other collections are also being planted. Vascular plants from the earliest land plants to the first flowering plants will be shown in the "Primitive Garden." Interpretive displays explaining the progression from reproduction by spores to reproduction by flower will be included. A "Native Flora Garden," "Camellia Species Collection," and "Physic Garden" are also being planned, among other collections.
