AASU Awarded First Fulbright-Hays Grant
Savannah, GA--The United States
Fulbright Commission has awarded a Fulbright-Hays Grant to Armstrong
Atlantic State University that will provide funding for twelve to fifteen
area educators' participation in a four-week summer program of study
in Argentina and Chile, South America, during June and July. The deadline
for application is April 15.
The program
will include a series of lectures and interactive sessions with a cross
section of scholars and leaders in business and industry. In addition,
members of the visiting team will study and travel in and around Santiago,
Valparaiso, Concepcion, Buenos Aires, Cordoba, and Mendoza. A
seminar on social, political, and economic transformation will be held
to stimulate a better understanding and greater degree of sensitivity
toward Chile and Argentina.
"This awareness will be passed on to students by the teachers involved
in the project," said project director Dr. James Anderson, professor
and special assistant to the vice president for international education.
The $65,000 grant was awarded on a highly competitive basis from the
U. S. Department of Educations Center for International Education.
It will enable elementary and secondary school teachers, college and
university professors, and academic administratorswith demonstrated
interest in Latin American and international studies the opportunity
to participate in a cultural exchange with both countries.
"There
are various ways by which institutions for higher learning can facilitate
a better understanding of our world, but none more prestigious than
through support of a Fulbright grant," said Dr. Thomas Z. Jones,
president of AASU. "This program will enhance intercultural understanding
between Chile and Argentina and the United States."
